Free guided hikes, and light refreshments will be offered. Join Shirley Heinze Land Trust, and representatives from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and the Nature Conservancy to explore Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve in Gary. Paul Labus of the Nature Conservancy will lead hikes and discuss plants, animals and ecology of the preserve. Mario Longoni of the Field Museum will invite participants to share their stories of nature and Gary, highlighting connections to our shared heritage across the region and the nation. Ivanhoe South features a globally rare dune-and-swale landscape. Characterized by a series of sandy ridges alternating with long narrow wetland depressions, all running parallel to the Lake Michigan shoreline, this unique topography formed over the past 5,000 years as the waters of the great lake receded in stages, each time leaving a sandy beach behind. The black oak savanna and interdunal wetland communities found here provide habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals. Over the last twenty years, restoration efforts have revived this rare habitat and its diverse flora and fauna.
