• Children’s Summer Programs at Westchester Public Library 2019

    Children ages 2-11 are invited to participate in various programs this summer at Westchester Public Library’s Thomas Branch, Hageman Branch and Baugher Center. In addition to these programs, the children’s summer reading program “A Universe of Stories!” will run from May 31 ­ July 21 at both branches.
    Some programs require registration. Please call or stop by the branch associated with the program. The Thomas Branch is located at 200 W. Indiana Ave. in Chesterton; phone number 926-7696. The Hageman Branch is located at 100 Francis St. in Porter; phone number 926-9080.

    Monday, June 3, 10 a.m.
    Space Explorers - Ages 2-5
    Hageman
    Complete an astronaut training course before your big mission. Once we’ve landed, we’ll craft a space-themed souvenir for you to take home. Wear something that you can get messy and/or wet.

    Jedi Trials - Ages 6-11
    Thomas
    Calling all young Jedi hopefuls! Create a foam lightsaber and be tested in the three major disciplines of a Jedi: strength, agility, and endurance. Dressing up is encouraged but not necessary. Registration required.

    Gravity Falls - Ages 2-5

    Join us for engaging activities all about everyone’s favorite force of nature:  gravity. We’ll be using everyday objects to observe gravitational concepts firsthand. Wear something that you can get messy and/or wet.

    Tinker, Create, Invent, and Have Fun: Space Lander Challenge - Ages 4-6

    An alien spacecraft has been spotted orbiting the library! Your mission: complete a space training program, decode alien messages, and build a space lander to welcome our alien friends. Registration required.

    Glow Party - Ages 6-11

    You’ve never seen the library GLOW like this before. Join us for some luminescent games, science and make galactic glow jars. Wear white or neon colors to stand out under our blacklight. Registration required.

    Skyscape - Ages 2-5
    Hageman
    Join us for stories and songs about the objects we see in the sky. Create your own shadow chalk art, conquer an outer space maze, create a galaxy craft, and more. Wear something that you can get messy in during this outdoor program.

    Adventures with Aliens - Ages 6-11
    Thomas
    STEAM with an extraterrestrial theme. Earn points by competing in a series of alien challenges. Create a glow-tacular flying saucer out of a Frisbee. Registration required.

    Monday, June 25, 2 p.m.
    The Science of Space...and Bubbles! - Ages 6+
    Baugher Center          
    Challenger Learning Center NWI is bringing the science to us. Flight Directors will guide us as we explore the moon, take an in-depth look at the madness of Mars, and unlock the secrets behind bubbles. A free ticket is required for entry to this event. Tickets may be acquired in the Children’s Dept. at Thomas or at the Hageman Branch beginning June 18.

    Ready to launch into orbit? Reach for the stars and rotate faster than the planets at our music and movement-based program. Get ready to sing and dance to your favorite interactive songs and have a blast experimenting with instruments, with parachute play, and more.

    Do you have what it takes to go to space? Test yourself with physical and mental activities that simulate the astronaut experience. Make your own glistening moon rock to take home. Registration required.

    Magic School Bus Monday - Ages 6-11
    Hageman
    Get lost in the solar system with Ms. Frizzle! Explore the exciting components of our galaxy, learn about gravitational force, and create a tea light of your favorite planet. Then, take the School Bus Gravity Challenge to answer the big question:  Can a school bus really fly? Registration required.

    Tinker, Create, Invent, and Have Fun: To Infinity and Beyond! - Ages 4-6

    What’s out there in the great beyond? Join us for stories, create a galaxy in a jar, construct a balloon hovercraft, and play a space game. Registration required.

    Have aliens ever visited earth? Come and watch our Aliens Love Underpants puppet show and find out. Join your fellow space buddies for some silly songs and a space-themed craft.

    Sun Fun with the Indiana Dunes State Park - Ages 6-11

    Ready to shine? With an Indiana Dunes State Park Naturalist’s help, you won’t be in the dark about the sun and its solar energy. Gather some of that light to make bookmarks and a small bead craft so that you can carry some of the sun home with you. Registration trequired.

    DC Universe of Fun - Ages 6-11
    Hageman
    Refresh your passion for all things DC comics before the WPL Comic Con! Figure out your superhero name using the Superhero Name Generator, participate in superhero-themed experiments, and paint a Wonder Woman or Superman picture frame. Registration required.
