    “Midwestern Soliloquy”
A new exhibit featuring oil artist, Laurie Schirmer Carpenter opens at The Village Gallery Sunday, December 9. The exhibit, “Midwestern Soliloquy”, features 22 original oil paintings depicting the beauty and quite of midwestern landscapes. Laurie will give a gallery talk at the Meet The Artist Reception, which is free and open to the public, at 1:30 pm on Sunday, December 9. Paintings can be viewed and purchased at The Village Gallery through January 17, 2019.
Carpenter grew up in northwestern Illinois and graduated from Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colorado with a degree in English Literature in 1967. After returning to school at the University of Colorado, Denver to study art, she graduated With Distinction with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a BA in Art History in 1988 and has been painting full time since then. When her husband was transferred to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1990 she became reacquainted with her Midwestern roots and developed an interest in the landscape, especially the skies, which are often depicted in her paintings.  Moving to northwestern Indiana in 2006, Carpenter continues to paint the landscape and skies around her.

Influenced by the 19th century German Romanticist, Caspar David Friedrich, and by the Luminist Painters of the Hudson River School, Carpenter describes her works as depicting the ephemeral quality of the atmosphere while maintaining the sense of the earth’s solidity, resulting in a perception of the vastness, beauty and quiet in the landscape. “Painting, for me, begins with seeing and ends with seeing better.” states Carpenter.
A Co-founder of the WSG Gallery in Ann Arbor which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2019, Carpenter also served on the Board of the Ann Arbor Women Artists organization. Since moving to Indiana, she has been juried into the Area Artists Association of the Lubeznik Center of the Arts in Michigan City as well as the Oak Park Art League of Oak Park, IL. Exhibiting locally and nationally, her oil paintings can be found in many private and corporate collections
