• Purdue Northwest offers free screening of documentary on economic impact of early learning

    January 16, 2019
HAMMOND AND WESTVILLE, Ind. — Purdue University Northwest’s (PNW) School of Education and Counseling hosts the first screening in Northwest Indiana of No Small Matter, a documentary film exploring the value of high quality early learning as a key driver of economic development.

Two screenings, along with a post-showing discussion with Co-Director Greg Jacobs will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in Room 150D in the Student Union & Library Building, 2233 173rd Street, at the Hammond Campus; and from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29 in Room 002 of the Library-Student-Faculty Building, 1401 South U.S. 421, at the Westville Campus.

“This screening further affirms PNW’s position as an impactful leader in early childhood education and builds on the work of the Strosacker Early Learning Fellows,” said Mary Jane Eisenhauer, associate professor of Early Childhood Education.

Through poignant stories and surprising humor, the film lays out the overwhelming evidence for the importance of learning in the first five years. It reveals how our failure to act on that evidence has resulted in an everyday crisis for American families, and a slow-motion catastrophe for the country.

Filmmakers Danny Alpert, Greg Jacobs, and Jon Siskel said, “As you’ll see in the film, early learning has such explosive potential to shape children’s futures, and reshape our society. It’s the most rational, no-nonsense, high return investment that we can make.”

PNW is partnering with Early Learning Connections, Lake Area United Way, United Way of Porter County and La Porte County United Way. Both events are free and open to the public.
