PORTER, IND.—Tourism research shows that kids play an active role in planning family vacations. Taking this and other key factors into account, Indiana Dunes Tourism worked with local artist Aaron Melendez to create the Indiana Dunes Discovery Kids, four characters who narrate the new Indiana Dunes Kids Guide.
In the Kids Guide, readers will discover kid-friendly places in the area with help from the Indiana Dunes Discovery Kids: Ayla, Jake, Zoe and Phil. Each character is an expert in a different part of the dunes experience, exploring area attractions in outdoor adventure, art and entertainment, history and culture and nature and wildlife—or, “beaches and beyond” as dubbed in the guide. So, no matter what kids like to do, they are sure to get the most out of their adventure here. Another character—Ranger Matt, host of Indiana Dunes Tourism’s Dunes 101 Video Series—also chimes in to offer helpful tips for parents throughout the guide.
In Indiana, students start diving into life science, earth science and local history in fourth grade. Because the Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana Dunes State Park, Dunes Learning Center, Porter County Museum, and other partners offer so many educational programs with those state standards in mind, fourth-graders are the perfect median audience for the Kids Guide.
“Working with fourth-grade focus groups in Porter and Johnson counties, we were able to write something educational and entertaining,” said Kailey Capuano, communications director at Indiana Dunes Tourism. “We’d love for families to share their experience with us on social media so the Kids Guide can make it into the hands of all the kids visiting the dunes.”
You can pick up a Kids Guide at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, 1215 N. State Rd. 49, Porter, Ind., request one online or view it digitally at indianadunes.com/destination-guides.
