  • Eight Indiana Dunes Beaches Remain Open After Chemical Spill

The National Park Service has temporarily closed the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk beach as a precaution following a chemical spill into the east branch of the Little Calumet River. All other national park beaches and trails remain open to the public, including trails at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk.

Currently, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is investigating the situation. For the most up-to-date information regarding the spill, refer to the Indiana Dunes National Park Alerts page: nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

Indiana Dunes Tourism’s top priority is to make sure visits to the Indiana Dunes are safe, welcoming, fun, and relaxing. We expect the beach and waters to reopen soon. Meanwhile, visitors can still enjoy any of the other beaches at the Indiana Dunes, including the Indiana Dunes State Park, as well as our area’s attractions, local shopping and dining, and outdoor recreation.

Questions on local drinking water quality should be referred to the individual water provider.
