  • Porter County Compost Sites Re-opening 2023

The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County has announced that Boone Grove and Portage Compost sites will REOPEN for the season on Monday, March 20, 2023.
Portage and Boone Grove Compost Sites will open for season March 20th with regular hours of 8am-4pm. Valparaiso Compost Site will extend operating hours to 8am-5pm beginning March 20th.
The District maintains three (3) sites throughout Porter County where residents can bring organic yard waste: branches, limbs, weeds, brush, and leaves. Residents can also pick up nutrient-rich compost for home gardening and lawn care. With spring just around the corner, it is the perfect time to clear out yard waste and bring it to one of Porter County’s compost sites:
Boone Grove Compost Site, 546 South 400 West (Hwy. 8 to 400 West, head north to 550 South)
Valparaiso Compost Site, 2150 W. Lincolnway (Hwy. 130 – 1 mile west of intersection with Joliet)
    Portage Compost Site, 6451 U.S. Highway 12
In addition to compost, the Valparaiso and Portage sites have containers for: drop off recycling, plastic bag recycling, smoke detectors and electronics recycling.  The Boone Grove site also has smoke detector, electronics and battery recycling.  (Please note: items, which contain Freon, such as air conditioners and refrigerators, are NOT accepted.)
The Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County is a state-mandated agency dedicated to providing services and educational programs, which help residents, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink. In addition to managing three compost sites throughout Porter County, the District also hosts household hazardous waste collection events, drop-off recycling sites, electronics, and battery recycling programs along with many other programs and outreach efforts available to Porter County Residents. The District is funded by an annual $20 user fee added to the property taxes of Porter County residents and businesses.
