Valparaiso, IN: Northwest Health – Porter now offers the new radiofrequency ablation technology that uses heat to remove tissue affected by Barrett's esophagus. Clinical studies have found that treatment with this system can eradicate Barrett’s tissue, reducing patients’ risk of progressing to esophageal cancer.
Patients who suffer from chronic heartburn or gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD) may be at risk for Barrett’s esophagus. Barrett's esophagus is a disease affecting the lining of the esophagus that is caused by chronic backwash of stomach contents, such as acid and enzymes. Because it may eventually progress to esophageal adenocarcinoma, early detection and treatment of Barrett's esophagus is very important.
“About 12 million American adults have Barrett's esophagus, but only 1.5 million have been diagnosed, “said Anish Chopra, M.D., gastroenterologist with Northwest Medical Group in Valparaiso. ”Patients with Barrett's esophagus may not experience any symptoms, but chronic heartburn, difficulty swallowing, nausea, and chest pain, may indicate a need for further testing.”
Patients should contact Northwest Medical Group – Gastroenterology at 219-464-9507 to schedule a consultation to learn if the new radiofrequency ablation system is appropriate for them.
