Valparaiso, IN – The Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County will host the 1st household hazardous waste collection event for the season on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the Porter County Expo located at 215 E. Division Road Valparaiso, IN. The event will take place from 9am to 2pm CST.
Participants are asked to enter the event from Gate 3.
The event will feature a free gas can exchange. Porter County residents can exchange old gas cans for eco-friendly 2.5 gallon gas cans. Supplies are limited. Gas cans will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.
Residents can dispose products containing: corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive substances. Common household hazardous waste items include aerosol cans, gasoline, anti-freeze, oil, batteries (household & automotive), medical sharps, medications (non-narcotic), oil based paints, solvents, paint thinners, pesticides, poisons, diesel fuel, kerosene, household smoke detectors, flammable liquids and ammunition.
In addition to household hazardous waste items, residents can dispose of clean and dry plastic bags, plastic film wraps, grocery bags and plastic wrapping. Water softener bags will not be accepted for recycling.
Items NOT accepted at this event include electronics, latex paint, tires, grill propane cylinders, and large containers over 55 gallons in size.
For those unable to participate on May 7, 2022, the second household hazardous waste collection event is scheduled for Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Portage High School located at 6450 U.S. Hwy 6, Portage, IN. The event will take place from 9am to 2pm CST.
